House Republicans Call for Stronger Action on Public Safety as Mayor Unveils "Safe Downtown Action Plan"
(Denver, CO – April 3, 2025) – In response to rising crime and growing concerns over public safety, House Republicans called on Mayor Mike Johnston to take action through a letter sent on March 3rd. Yesterday, the Mayor unveiled the "Safe Downtown Action Plan," which includes a dedicated 10-officer unit for downtown and increased patrols aimed at protecting Denver’s residents, businesses, and visitors.
“We welcome these initial resources as a positive step, but this is only the beginning,” said House Minority Leader Rose Pugliese (R-Colorado Springs). “Denver has seen a disturbing rise in crime, with violent crime rates above the national average, and while we appreciate these efforts, we will not stop pushing for more robust actions to ensure the safety of our legislators and citizens.”
While the Safe Downtown Action Plan is a move in the right direction, Representative Dan Woog (R-Erie) stressed the need for a stronger approach.
"We are grateful for the work that the men and women of the Denver Police Department do every day to keep Coloradans safe," said Representative Woog. "Unfortunately, however, the reality is that their efforts are being undermined by soft-on-crime policies coming from the Legislature. These policies have made it harder to keep the public safe and have emboldened criminals."
This initiative comes after a troubling rise in violent crime, including the fatal stabbings on the 16th Street Mall earlier this year. House Republicans will continue to fight for commonsense policies that restore order and security, working alongside Mayor Johnston and other stakeholders to ensure a safe and thriving Denver.
