Republican Sponsored Topical Treatment Bill Gets Signed into Law
(Colorado State Capitol, April 22, 2024) -- Today, SB24-087, Health Facility Topical Medication Continued Care, sponsored by Rep. Mary Bradfield (R-Colorado Springs) was signed into law by Lieutenant Governor Diana Primavera.
“This is a simple bill that will allow Colorado patients to have continuity in treatment while reducing unnecessary waste in topical treatment products,” said Rep. Bradfield. “I am glad to be a part of this good sense measure that will save billions in unused topicals and improve quality of care,” added Bradfield.
This legislation will put in place common-sense policy that will remove frivolous legal barriers. Topical antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, dilating drops, glaucoma drops, and ointments all provide patients relief, and by removing these inconsistent barriers to their administration, patients will be able to leave medical facilities without having a lapse in treatment.
Allowing a healthcare facility to send patients home with certain topical medications that were administered while at the facility rather than throwing them away will cut down on the amount of product that gets thrown away unnecessarily each year.
