Rep. Weinberg on Governor Polis' Signing of HB24-1336 to Streamline Broadband Funding in Colorado
(Denver, CO - May 22, 2024) -- Representative Weinberg recognizes Governor Polis' signing of HB24-1336, a key legislative measure to streamline broadband funding in Colorado.
HB24-1336, "Sunset Broadband Deployment," repeals the Broadband Deployment Board and transfers authority for awarding High Cost Support Mechanism (HCSM) broadband funding to the Colorado Broadband Office. This change aims to enhance efficiency and centralize broadband deployment efforts.
"Transferring broadband funding to the Colorado Broadband Office marks a new era in bridging the digital divide," said Representative Weinberg. "This bill eliminates redundancy and positions the Broadband Office to better serve our communities, especially rural areas."
Despite DORA's recommendation to continue the Broadband Deployment Board for another five years, HB24-1336 consolidates authority within the Colorado Broadband Office for a more streamlined process.
"The integration into the Colorado Broadband Office ensures a more connected and accessible Colorado," added Weinberg.
The bill permits up to five percent of HCSM allocations for broadband deployment grants to be deposited into the Broadband Office Administrative Fund. This fund will be used for the administration of grants, improving oversight and management.
With HB24-1336, Colorado reaffirms its dedication to bridging the digital divide and ensuring all residents thrive in an increasingly digital world.
