Representative Lynch's Statement on HB24-1219 Becoming Law
(Denver, CO - May 29, 2024) - Representative Lynch announced that HB24-1219, "First Responder Employer Health Benefit Trusts," has become law. This bill aims to provide enhanced health benefits for first responders, ensuring they receive the medical support they need.
"This bill is a crucial step in supporting our first responders," said Representative Lynch. "By expanding health benefits, we are taking care of those who risk their lives to keep our communities safe."
For firefighters, the bill extends state funding for heart and circulatory malfunction benefits to include paid part-time and volunteer firefighters. It also funds cancer benefits for eligible firefighters with at least five years of continuous service.
For peace officers, the bill mandates employers to participate in a funded trust that provides cardiovascular screenings and other health screenings as practicable.
The bill includes a provision that makes these programs voluntary if state funding is insufficient, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
"This legislation ensures that our first responders receive potentially life-saving medical screenings, while also being mindful of our state's budget," concluded Lynch.
