Colorado House Republicans Call on Mayor Johnston to Address Denver’s Crime Crisis
(Denver, CO – March 3, 2025) – Today, the Colorado House Republicans delivered a formal letter to Mayor Johnston expressing deep concerns over the escalating crime crisis in Denver and urging immediate action to restore safety in the state's capital city. The letter read as follows:
Dear Mayor Johnston,
We write to you as the unified voice of the Colorado House Republicans, deeply concerned about the alarming state of safety in our capital city. Denver was once a place where families and businesses thrived. Now, it has become a neglected metropolis where violent crime, drug overdoses, and lawlessness have made it unsafe for those who work and live here. The Colorado State Capitol sits in the heart of this crisis, and the rising crime in Denver has put our members, staff, and the public at risk.
The list of incidents is endless. There have been shootings mere blocks from the Capitol. We have seen open drug use and overdoses on the steps of government buildings. Our own members and staff have received death threats simply for fulfilling their duties, as well as being spit on crossing over Colfax Avenue. Most recently, there have been multiple stabbings just blocks from the locations where many of our official events are held and where businesses should be thriving.
Denver’s growing crime problem is not just our concern—it is a crisis affecting every citizen who calls this city home. We implore you to take immediate action. Strengthen law enforcement presence and enforce laws that prohibit open drug use. The people of Colorado deserve a capital city where they can walk without fear, where citizens going to work are not looking over their shoulders, and where families feel safe to visit.
Mayor Johnston, we urge you to meet with our caucus as soon as possible to address these critical safety concerns and discuss common-sense steps to ensure the protection of all who live, work, and visit Denver. Let us work together to make Denver safe again.
Sincerely,
The Colorado House Republicans of the 75th General Assembly:
